In general, contact lens solution is used to
take good care of your contact lens. Contact lenses are thin, finely
crafted plastic discs designed to fit over the cornea of the eye,
usually to correct vision problems caused by refractive error. They are
held in place by a natural layer of tears on the surface of the eye.
In addition, contact lenses provide better peripheral vision and
virtually eliminate the image distortion sometimes caused by eyeglasses.
Contact lenses are now available for the correction of most vision
problems caused by refractive defects of the eye including
nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
There
are several types of contact lenses- such as bifocal contact lenses,
colored contact lenses, cosmetic contact lenses, disposable contact
lenses and even custom contact lens. Remember to use good contact lens
cleaner for contact lens cleaning. Some general guidelines should be
followed for all lens types. Always wash your hands before removing or
inserting the lens.
There are several types of cleaning solutions
available. You should use the appropriate contact lens solution
recommended to be used with your contact lenses. The types of solutions
are as follows:
Cleaning solution: A cleaning solution removes
dirt, mucus and debris that accumulate during lens wear. Lenses should
be rubbed gently for a few seconds to loosen the debris and then rinsed
with a saline solution.
Rinsing solution: After cleaning,
lenses should be rinsed with a commercial saline contact lens solution.
Disinfecting solution: The disinfecting solution inhibits and/or kills
bacteria and other harmful micro organisms on the lenses that can cause
eye infections. After cleaning and rinsing lenses, they should be stored
overnight in a storage case filled with fresh disinfecting solution.
Multipurpose solution: A combination solution designed to clean, rinse
and disinfect contact lenses.
Rewetting solution: Drops that lubricate the lenses while they are being
worn. They can be used all day to keep the eyes moist and to enhance the
comfort of wearing contact lenses.
All
solutions used for cleaning, rinsing, and disinfecting contact lenses
should be discarded after the expiry date on the bottle. To avoid
contact lenses dry eyes, always follow the opthalomogist's
recommendations for cleaning and caring for your lenses.
Except
for contact lenses that are worn for a short, continuous period and then
thrown away, all contact lenses require cleaning, disinfecting, and
rinsing on a daily basis. In fact, a contact lens that has been removed
from the eye should never be reinserted without cleaning and
disinfecting. Never sleep in contact lenses unless approved by
opthalomogist. Whenever a lens is removed, it should be cleaned, rinsed,
and disinfected before being worn again. Be careful to protect your
lenses from lotions, creams, and sprays. Lenses should always be
inserted before applying makeup and removed after makeup has been
removed.
