The medical term for nearsightedness is
myopia. It is a vision disorder in which you are unable to see the
distant objects clearly and accurately while you can see close objects
clearly. Myopia is caused due to longevity of the eyeball than the
normal thus causing light rays to focus at a time in front of the retina
and not directly on its surface. Also a nearsighted eye can see near
objects with less effort than a normal eye as it requires less amount of
accommodation for near ones as compared to the distant objects. Because
of this reason, people remove their spectacles or lenses for close
reading and other such tasks.
In fact, a mild
nearsightedness is really beneficial after 40 years of age when one
experiences normal age related condition called presbyopia as
nearsighted eye can see close objects clearly without accommodation. As
said by American Optometric Association, about 30 percent of the
American people are nearsighted. This condition usually occurs in
childhood and can worsen throughout the schooling years. Some of the
symptoms of nearsightedness are:
A) Headaches
B) Squinting while viewing distant objects
C) Blurred vision
D) Fatigue
Nearsightedness is also detected with the help of an eye exam and school
vision screenings for the school children. Now the question arises
whether this condition can be prevented or not? Well, the answer is yes.
Fitting gas permeable contact lenses in some nearsighted youngsters
would slow down or halt the progression of their myopia.
Some doctors are also advised to use bifocal lenses to reduce
their accommodation stress while reading. It is believed that relieving
stress could reduce the chances of youngsters having nearsightedness or
myopia, however this is still controversial.
Nearsightedness can be corrected by using spectacles, contact lenses and
refractive surgery. You have to wear your lenses all the time or when
you need distance vision depending on your vision problem. A person with
nearsightedness usually has a negative number as a prescription. The
higher the numeral, the stronger would be the lenses. Normally, a mild
nearsightedness is easily corrected but in some cases it becomes more
severe which is considered as pathologic and develops in the age of 12
when the person has an extraordinary elongated eyeball. It may result in
loss of vision.
