Strabismus is a vision disorder in which your
eyes are not aligned or your eyes do not look towards the same object
together. It is really hard to detect and can be constant or
intermittent. It results in affecting one eye or can alternate between
the two eyes. Mainly, there are four types of strabismus which are based
on the direction of the misaligned eye. These are:
A) Exotropia- In this condition, one eye points out or have a look like
wall-eyed.
B) Esotropia- In this condition, one eye points in or looks like
cross-eyed.
C) Hypertropia- In this condition, one eye points up.
D) Hypotropia- In this condition, one eye points down.
Unequal pulling of muscles on one side of the eye or a
paralysis of the ocular muscles results in strabismus. Normally, when a
person with farsightedness tends to focus to compensate, he ends up
developing accommodative strabismus. This condition is common in people
below two years of age up to six years. In some cases it is also caused
by the over action of one or more muscles due to uncorrected
farsightedness. Some of the symptoms of strabismus includes:
A) Squinting of one eye because of bright light.
B) Decreased visual acuity in the turned eye.
C) Uncoordinated eye movements.
D) Poor depth perception
E) Double vision
F) Headache and eyestrain
Moderate and severe strabismus is easy to detect by simply observing the
person but in some cases the degree of eye turn is so small that it can
only be detected with specialized training by your doctor.
After
examining, your doctor may order you a particular treatment option for
its cure. The first step includes a complete eye examination to
determine if corrective lenses are indicated. In case of expected
farsightedness, eye drops are added to relax the focusing muscles of the
eye. But many children with strabismus are treated by wearing prescribed
lenses which fully correct their vision disorder. Other treatments
includes surgery and vision therapy. No matter what treatment option is
applied for its cure, its really important to detect and treat
strabismus as early as possible for the best results.
