Have you ever wondered who invented the contact lens? Was it one person, or it was a joint effort of many people? Well, let us find out who were all the people who share the credit of making the contact lenses.

The first time, somebody heard of a contact lens was in 1000 A.D. But, according to the Doghouse Technologies, it was Leonardo Da Vinci who drew diagrams and sketches of the contact lenses somewhere around the 1500s. After some hundred years, a person named Rene Descartes came out with a suggestion of corneal contact lenses in the year 1632.

These people are thought to be geniuses born before their time. They did not have the means to turn this dream into reality, as technology then was not so advanced to support them. Then, in the year 1801, a person named Thomas Young produced a glass tube and filled it with water. This tube also had a microscopic lens. He made use of the Descartes idea, and after a few alterations, used the lens himself.

In the year 1827, an English astronomer named Sir John Herschel tried his hands on contact lenses. He had an idea that by grinding a contact lens to fit properly on the eye one can work miracles. After some 60 years, F.E. Muller, a glass blower, made an invention in the same field. He made the first ever eye covering that was designed to be worn for a longer period.

Apart from these people, there are some more people who should be mentioned while talking about the invention of the contact lenses. A. Eugen Fick and Edouard Kalt are considered to have used the lenses to correct the vision problems. Another name is Joseph Dallos. In the year 1936, William Feinbloom, an optometrist from the New York, made use of plastic to make the contact lenses for the first time.

After that, Dr. George Butterfield produced a corneal contact lens which was molded to follow the shape of the eye. Thus, no one person is the inventor of the contact lens, and it is a joint venture of various people.
